WHAT IS A CUBESAT?

A CubeSat is considered a "nano-satellite." Its main defining feature is that the footprint of its top and bottom face must be 10cm x 10cm. The length can vary from 10cm (1U) to more than 60cm (6U) in length. SpudNik-1  which is a 2U, will be 20cm long.

HOW IT WORKS

The SpudNik-1 satellite is made up of many different systems that bring everything together and make it work. The systems currently in development are: Command & Control, Structure & Payload, Power, and Communications. These systems define the physical frame of the CubeSat, the control system that moves it, the power system that ensures all the components get the electricity they need to operate, and the communications system that allows the satellite and ground station on Earth to have contact.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

The SpudNik-1 satellite will be used for precision agriculture. In simpler terms, it's going to take pictures of fields on PEI from space, allowing farmers to see where fertilizers and pesticides need to be used. This will mean fewer pesticides used, resulting in savings for the farmers, and a cleaner environment for everyone.
